Good article, and nice C8. I know of at least 5 Corvettes in my semi-rural "neighborhood": 2 C3's, one C4, one C6, and one C7. There used to be a C2, and there may be some yet to be seen, hiding in garages.

My dad ordered a new 1964 Skylark hardtop with A/C (and manual steering, but he was plenty strong). I thought that it was great to cruise in the cool, showing off for my neighborhood friends, and strangers sharing the highways; I don't know if Dad felt the same or not. Funny thing, then, that when I got older, I started rarely using the A/C in my cars, and also started driving convertibles. I still rarely use the A/C when by myself; I just prefer the windows open.

Having owned three Beetles, I would guess something was wrong with that Beetle. Even with the drag of A/C, that engine should have been able to go much faster, and in 4th gear. It has been said that A/C uses 5-10 HP. A 1970 Beetle had a claimed 60 HP, so it might drop to 50, and top speed would suffer. However, even a 40 HP 1200cc Beetle (admittedly lighter) would still reach at least 70 mph, and a 1300cc 50 HP Beetle would top 70, per accounts from that era. My 53 HP 1969 Beetle topped out at about 78 on level ground with no wind. So, again, that air-conditioned Beetle should have been able to do much more than 45.

All of them are really cool. The Volvo looks sooooo much better as a wagon, than as the dated-looking coupe. I am partial to the Dodge, though, since my grandfather bought a 1960 Dodge Dart Seneca 318/TorqueFlite wagon new. It was a beast to drive, I would guess, with manual steering and brakes, but he was plenty strong to handle it. I rode a lot of miles in that car with him.

Some nice-looking bikes here. "... classic ’70s naked-bike styling..." - to me, that is still how bikes are supposed to look! I realize it mainly depends upon when one got interested in motorcycling, and for me, it was the 1970's. That Norton, the Kaw, and above all, the CBX - wow. I wish they still made bikes like that. And I would put my money down on one, not just talk about it: I bought a Honda CB1100 when they first came out in 2013. It was a combination of various Honda models' styling, but still looked darn good: no acres of plastic, no blacked-out engines, no "Transformer" styling.

I would say that most US cars (at least mid-priced and above ones) of 50 years ago were made to cruise at 70, sometimes-wandering bias-ply tires notwithstanding. Until the 55 MPH limit went into effect in early 1974, I believe that most states had limits of 70 or more. My dad's 1961, 1964, and 1968 Buicks, and my grandfather's 1967 Dodge Monaco, certainly had no such trouble. Nor does my 1975 Olds 88 convertible, nor did my former 1968 327 Impala. Perhaps some 6-cylinder compacts and such were not comfortable at 70, I don't know. My 1969 Beetle would seemingly cruise at 70 all day, but it was German, after all.

With Ford's excellent 2.7 EcoBoost V6, no need for a heavy V8 (as much as many of us may love them - 5.0 forever!) My sister-in-law and her husband have the 2.7 EcoBoost in an F-150, and it pulls their 5-6000 pound trailer over the mountains without a whimper.

Polestar is a looker (that vestigial spoiler notwithstanding), but made in Communist China? No deal. We have enough things we HAVE to buy from there, but not cars - at least not yet. The Jeep? It will hold its value well, but assuming it continues to be built, it has little potential to be a true collectible. Caddy? Maybe...but only if more than a very select few ever know what it is about.

I totaled a deer and a vehicle hitting an 8-point buck several years ago, and my wife damaged her GrandPrix a few years ago hitting a deer (who left the scene) - a mile from home! Nevertheless, to us, the experience of the two-lanes and back roads is worth the animal risk.

I agree with several of these choices, but not the Capri II, which always looked like a needlessly-stretched Capri to me. A friend had one with the 4-cylinder (2300?) and 4-speed, and it was a stone, to boot. Neither do I agree on the Raider. A friend had the Montero (in fact she had two, back in the 1990's - a square one like the Raider, and a later one that was somewhat sleeker. That aside, why trade the "Urban Guerilla" Montero for a "Raider"? That sounds too much like the Cylon Raiders from Battlestar Galactica! Personally, I think of the Opel by Izuzu first, among captive imports! (Just kidding.)

In re-reading what he wrote, I don't think that he is saying that they were the same car. Rather, I think he is saying that the two separate models, the Hillman Avenger and the Mitsubishi Galant, were both sold as Crickets - just in different countries. Kinda confusing, for sure. I agree - the Colt was said to be a really good, sporty little car, while the Cricket (cool commercials and ads aside) was said to be of poor quality, typical of British cars of the time. In HS, I knew a girl whose parents bought a Cricket, and it had one of the worst quality factory paint jobs I ever saw.
