I use to have a 1974 Sport Coupe 1800 that was purchased new from the San Francisco fiat dealer by my older sister. It was a hand me down which my sister never modified. She said the dealer refered to it as a Super Sport Coupe. I've never found any reference to a super sport version of the car. It was one of the fastest cars I've ever owned. I had a challange to start out in 1st gear and go to 5000 rpm in all gears. In 4th gear at 4000rpm I always chickened out at 150mph. I did drive the car faster once in a race with a Porsche Carrera but all i recall is I shifted into 5th gear at 160mph. The speedometer went to 185. I was once chased by a California Highway Patrolmen who said he was doing 125 and I was leaving him behind like he was standing still. When I responded "I wasn't even in 5th gear yet" I thought he was going to hit me with his night stick. He didn't clock me and agreed to write me up for 80 in a 55. What luck. It is remarkable (and sad) how hard it is getting to find a lot of parts for vehicles 10+ years old, I agree.  Step out to 20, 30, 40, or more years and parts cars are almost the only option for a lot of stuff.  And suitable parts vehicles are getting awfully scarce, too.  Rock and hard place really: you need to get a couple of parts cars since you can't always source parts, but nobody wants to let you store "those old junkers" in your back yard!  I was just talking to a guy with a '73 C-10 and a '69 Chevelle Malibu.  He is tearing his hair out trying to find various interior items (pick-up vent window, car interior trim pieces in blue, etc.).  Not too many years ago, there would have been some junkyard opportunities - but parts for a '73 and a '69?  No way.  They might have a 2010 Impala out there - maybe.   🙄 ... He talks about the great demand for electric vehicles and it fascinates me how, since the whole "global warming" fiasco, it has produced mass hysteria and mass insanity not only in this country, but in the whole world. No one seems to know that electricity does not magically come out of a plug in the wall and the processes for producing batteries and disposing of them combined with the emissions from producing electricity will far out do any pollution our modern combustion engines produce. I just fraction of the money spent on R&D for electric was spent on making combustion engines more efficient, we could probably reduce the emissions to almost nothing, but oh no, that won't buy votes or make scammers rich.   ... As they say opinions are like well you fill it in but everyone has one.  There are various forms of compilation today and levels with varying cost.  Access you budget, skill level and match it to what you can afford or do.   Being honest with your skills is the key as anyone can buy a car but few can extract what is needed to drive them.  As they say Fast guys, Rich guys and idiots.  My buddy a good drive often is fixing damage by someone that is over their head.  Computer racing today is where many drivers are coming from. They have mastered the skill less the seat of the pants feeling. What a wonderful piece of writing! And a great tribute to your van. I have a similar vehicle--my 244k-mile 1999 Chevy Silverado. I didn't buy it new--I paid $1800 in 2019 for it--and it has proved to be an astounding value in the 10k miles I've added. It was was a tad spooky when I got it, but less than $300 in shocks fixed that. And it has a small coolant leak that triggers the light now and then, but it starts every single time (provided the battery is charged), does everything I ask of it, is comfortable, and still looks great.    Sounds like unrealistic expectations to me.  My classics have all been understood to be just that - never to be compared with the newer, more sophisticated vehicles that I use for specific purposes or daily driving.  If one climbs into a '66 automobile and thinks it should perform like a 2021 example, one just doesn't "get" what the idea really is, in my opinion.    Likewise, I'd never board a 1950 Piper Cub and expect that it was going to take me somewhere with the speed and comfort of a Boeing 777.  My advice: stop comparing and just enjoy the blast from the past!   😊 ...
