Many towing failures, especially blown tires and sway, are caused by excessive speed. Most trailer tires aren't rated for 80 mph. I always tow at 65-70 mph. Towing with a truck with a lift kit isn't safe as well.

Had a 91 Spirit as a company car. Wasn't awful, rode and drove decent for the day. Didn't have it long enough to learn how poor their reliability was.

I have worked in the auto industry for more than 30 years and my experience is a bit different from the authors. I have seen significantly more rust from the 80s and 90s Japanese cars than their American or German counterparts of the Era. Especially from Subaru and Nissan.

The rollovers were mostly caused by poor driving not poor design. I had my right rear Firestone tire catastrophically fail (the bead and shreads of rubber were all that was left on the wheel) on my 94 Explorer 2dr at 65 mph in a left hand curve. There were no control issues and was able to safely slow and get off the road.

I have my dad's 88 Country Squire with the infamous "wood" trim. It was his baby and is in great shape. I get plenty of 👍 when driving it.

Car is a death trap. Zero side crash protection. Lady driving a Chevy Sprint turned left in front of me in my 85 Fiero. My tiny lightweight Fiero hit square in the passenger side door at 40 mph and almost cut her car in half nearly killing her (months in the hospital). The Fiero was also destroyed but I walked away unhurt.
