Lets not rewrite history, the weight was an issue when compared to its peers of the time. The Supra turbo added more weight as did the popular Targa top option as well. The 87 Turbo Targa weighted more than 400# more than a 87 Corvette Coupe. The Supra price fell about half way between a loaded IROC-Z and Corvette. The 305 Z28 that you are referring has to be the base model 305 engine, the 305 TPI 5MT and 350 TPI models were a little faster than Turbo's 7M-GTE never mind NA 7M-GE. The Supra was leap and bounds better quality than IROC-Z. So it really isn't fair comparison to compare them just on performance, but MKIII Supra was more of boulevard cruiser. In my 20's I had an 85 Supra 5MT, my good friend had an 88 Supra N/A 5MT (which with 200hp wasn't any faster than my 161hp 85 Supra because of the extra weight added). The headgasket issue that plagued them in the 90's imagine must have been resolved by now. If it hasn't, someone who is mechanically inclined should be able to fix it as it is straight forward motor to work on. I would recommend a 5MT model, the 7M did not have the best low end torque, so the automatic really affects its off line performance. The auto's I drove were dogs off the line. I have not look at those Supra in a long time, but I imagine it is not easy to find an unmolested version, the MKIII Supra partial because of its headgasket issue were a cheap car for at least 10-15 years. I have been interested in a few BAT auctions and I could see myself biding in the future. In the past when I have bought vehicles long distance, I paid to have them inspected and flown out to put own eyes on the vehicle before finalizing the purchase. When you find vehicle that you like on BAT that isn't reasonably local, do you scramble to find someone to have it inspected before placing bids and hope the inspection person is honest? If the car was drastically misrepresented, it seems like I would very least be out of the BAT fee. It doesn't seem like I can put a contingency on the pending my own personal inspection either. As prior C4 owner, I think a good portion of segment of the potential buyers are "Corvette owners". What I mean in that term is they are looking to buy a Corvette not other performance cars in the segment. The problem with C4 is GM keeps build better and faster Corvette's. I suspect in the future, C5 will be in the same predicament. I would probably never buy another C4, but I would buy another Corvette. I like C4 but not enough own another one. In general, they were much more mechanically reliable in general than the sought after Japanese sports car of their day. The cosmetic did wear worse than the competitors from Japan. ... View more

I read the title and I had my skepticism on, but it was an interesting article. One of my car guys friends uses a Saturn as daily driver. About 5 years ago, it got into an accident and was totaled. It was late 90's model and it had 325k miles, I said something to him along the line of you can now buy yourself a new nicer daily driver. Much to my surprise, he was all pissed off. I am guessing that I am not the only one with this issue as a car guy living in the snow belt. I care too much about my cars as an enthusiast.  20 years ago, I bought an AWD GMC Syclone to be my year round driver while my Corvette sat in the garage.  It was low mile rust free SoCal truck, that I couldn't bring myself to drive it in the winter.  More recently I bought an AWD Sports Sedan that wasn't as collectible, I still couldn't bring myself to drive it in the winter and it sits my garage with my Syclone in the winter.  I do have a sacrificial lamb as my beater, but I still keep it cleaner than most people keep their car. ... I owned my 86 C4 from 1994 until 2006. I never had a single issue with my dash. The tach was useless at WOT but that was my biggest gripe. The issues I saw when I owned mine were from owners taking them apart and not paying attention when they reassembling them and damaging the LCD, perhaps that is the issue you are seeing. I agree the interior quality was an issue and the interior really need to be babied. I saw this when they were 6-8 year old in looking at used examples. I took note of this, I was really careful and my interior still looked good after 20 years. ... View more

I think it is kind of neat to see the 84-89 C4 dash mentioned.  I had a 86 and I always thought the 84-89 digital dashes looked cool (especially at night) and were the best by far of any of the digital dash of that era. The tach was useless at WOT, though. The dash technology was too slow to update. The C4 didn't accelerate hard so the speedometer wasn't that big of deal.  The ZR-1 was supposed to be introduce in 1989 and was suppose to use a variation of that dash, fortunately by the next year they update the dash to use analog tach.   I think if you were young in the 80's, the 80's Atari dash is probably nostalgic.
