That's a great tip. One of the best starting points in Europe for sure. Like you say, a 2 hour drive gets you to lots of cool places. And a 10 hour drive can you arrested!

It was Rakija but actually more like a grappa. Definitely made from the waste of the wine pressings. I distilled mine this year and I can already say that it pales in comparison to that old man's hooch.

I'm no expert on Middle-Eastern languages but when set to Arabic, google translates the sign via the camera. Turkish uses a similar character set to English but with a lot more squiggles and accents. More or less, it's readable to someone who knows the English alphabet.

You got it. The other week I had the motor apart to do the timing belt and found that my garage is too small to squeeze my bike (stashed in the back of the garage) by either side of the car. So I was walking a lot a few weeks ago.

Thanks. They are different plates on the same car. Here in Germany, the plate doesn't follow the car for life like in the UK or Australia. The first two letters represent the town the car is registered in. If the car migrates from one town to another or changes hands, the plate is supposed to be turned in and re-registered. In this case, the early plates were from Balingen (BL) in the Black Forest. I was allowed to drive on them for a few weeks before they had to be turned in. The later plates are LB for my town outside of Ludwigsburg.

Totally agree on the Lada over Lloyd comment! I chatted to a few oldtimers here in Germany and they told me boarding school, particularly to learn English, wasn't all too uncommon.

That is kinda sad! This should be a family treasure. I tried to find the car and the family but ran into a dead end. I would absolutely love to hand these photos back over to the decedents of these folks. They came from a huge box of photos that probably came from an estate sale.

I'm an absolute sucker for Valiants and the earlier the better. I had an Aussie one in South Carolina for a bit that I bought off a rancher while visiting Tasmania, then shipped it over. It was that oddball 245 Hemi with the little 904 Torq-Flite. I think some guy in Iowa has it now.

We are absolutely on the same track there. While I can't imagine waiting for a car that I ordered 13 years ago, I can imagine looking 13 years for the right Skoda Rapid somewhere in the plains of Saskatchewan. I had a Skoda Favorit for a bit but had to scrap it due to the rust. An old Felicia or Octavia would be obtainable but due to my unwillingness to spend money, a Tatra or Chaika is out of my league. I guess I'll start my 13 year clock for a deal on one of those.

Fantastic read! As a former employee of the detail bays of Saturn of Raleigh (2001-2003), I can attest to the loyalty of Saturn customers. Even the salesmen, for the most part, were in love with the brand and grew disappointed when the metal panels, shared platforms, and even Honda motors trickled in. Mega kudos to this girl and her support network.
