The cable clutch in Mustangs until 2004 was certainly a “characterful” anachronism but it had a surprisingly brilliant means of driver adjustment. The cable rides on a two piece quadrant attached to the pedal box just past the pedal. The two haves are joined by a ratcheting mechanism. As the cable wore and stretched the driver simply placed a foot under the pedal and pushed up until it stopped as the ratchet took up the slack. As with all feats of cleverness there was of course a drawback, in this case the brittle plastic quadrant shattering itself to bits with too enthusiastic an adjustment, which the vast aftermarket made much hay out of… I owned several, still miss my ‘94 GT.
