This is very interesting history of the Ford Taurus, at least to me. I have owned a 1997 SHO for 23 years now, and after being off the road since 2000, and in a good storage room, she is back on the road TODAY! Have my new antique registration/plates and just today returned to the Ford dealer where I originally purchased her back in 1999, for a safety inspection. It was the hit of the dealership! Stirred up by the service manager himself calling his mechanics and parts department to come take a look at the 'old school' SHO (O: I captured the moment on video and plenty of still shots as well. Sorry to say, the sales man who made the sale had past away a few years ago (so I just found out). But, the previous owner of the dealerships' son has been running the service dept. for some time now, and I made sure to get him in a photo with the car. You don't have to be a "new owner" for the sticker shock of repairs.... They seem to take delight in bring you the tablet, rubbing their chin and looking concerned (I seriously think they have a special class for this) and telling you the "necessary" repairs and "suggested maintenance." My first "free maintenance at 19K (I bought her CPO with 9K) had him come out, sit down all serious and present me with $3500 worth of work that was "suggested for the longevity BMW's are known for." I'm still loyal and on my 3rd.... and discovered local reputable folks doing it for less than half..... I must do something right... It really bothers me that the automotive community treats the gen 1 and gen 2 SHO as the red headed step child. A really phenomenal sport sedan. I had a 95 ATX that my oldest daughter learned to drive in. She had no idea what is was other than her dad's 4 door and did not understand why all the boys at school were drooling over her dad's car. We drove it up to a little over 200,000 miles before the A/C compressor failed and the transmission started to slip. I now have a 93 ATX with 57000 miles and thoroughly enjoy driving it and love the attention it garners. .....and I do not have to have classic car insurance.
