GM was just not forward thinking enough to put gaps in the naming convention, and the fact that they reuse RPO codes. There are three distinct LT-1's from 1970 to today. The best example of genius in naming is the periodic table of elements. It was developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 when all that was around was a manual scale to measure elements. I use to work just outside of Pittsburgh in the 80ties.Back than there was a big PPG facility making automotive glass. Not sure what happened to that plant but again when the US gives up base material production it is really hard to recover. For this article not a big deal for any Lambo, the market place says if you can afford one, you better be able to pay the price for maintenance. etm63 has it right, 240 ended in 73. Emissions and the big bumpers knocked performance down so hard they had to up the displacement. Living in Cincinnati I had a 72, I bought in 1978, my first car. I couldn't drive a stick but didn't care. Also it was already a rust bucket that I had to fix. Also didn't care! Just a fantastic car, even today. I do remember a Porsche designed 5 speed available in 1970 but never saw one in a car. It would go over 120 mph. Did that on the way to Mid-Ohio for an IMSA race. Not the brightest thing in the world to do on a set of Firestone 721's but I was 19. On the styling end, a top two from Japan and a top 20 of all time. If you look the roof line is exactly the same as the 62 GTO. Someone even said there was one in the studio during design. That is why they sell a GTO body kit for the 240. I have always been a GM guy, although came close to several fastback Mustangs and really wanted the guy on my paper route's 70 428 Mach I! That was way back in the day. Between Camaro's, Corvette's, Chevelle's, El Camino's, and Monte Carlo's just to mention the midsize and medium/small cars no question Chevy has way more to offer. Didn't even talk about Nova's Corvair's, and Impala SS, even the Caprice had a 427 4 speed option. On trucks, no question, expect the gen I bronco, Chevy/GMC totally dominates. Mostly because the trucks through 72 had a four link rear suspension, and no I beam front. Really hurt sales/load capacity then but now they are so much easier to make modern. Ford dominates the peak values, Bullet Mustang, Boss Mustang, and GT40, after that no contest. The Cobra is kind of a Ford so will give that that as well. ... View more

Before the Hayabusa super bike became the king of all Suzuki's, these small machines were their best products and just great drivers. I had the next gen version, the four stroke GS450S. Same basic body, wheels and wheel base. Had a quarter fairing and was an easy bike to learn to ride, was a beautiful machine. I had a 240Z as my first car and was looking to relive the glory days, but purchase and parts costs put the idea out of range. I really don't know why the market isn't there for Supra, Z car, and some of the other more rare Japanese cars, maybe they weren't supposed to break? Like hyperv6 said the aftermarket can make a living producing parts for almost all GM, most of Ford and Chrysler repo parts. THe Benz was the car buy back then no question. on the STE, not sure where he found suede interior...we called it mouse fur, and I was at GM marketing. Pontiac was given the banner to go after the more sports/touring customers. The STE started with those really cool 6 headlights, but Bonneville SSE and then SSEi were the best representation of what they could do with a seriously compromised architecture. Buick on the other hand made some understated winners. The T type Century (6000 cousin) was understated but did offer the 3.0L version of the 3.8L so it was actually a lot more fun to drive. Although Pontiac engineers (yes in the 80tiesand 90ties each division still had dedicated engineering input) went further to improve handling, faster steering and less lean. That facility has been vacant for over 60 years but has been an icon and or a right of passage for interlopers for over 50 years. The problem is the place is a microcosm of Detroit. Was a world class facility in the 50ties, now it's the epitome of neglect. Even if they tear it down the acreage is like a DMZ. The GM Factory Zero (say Hamtramck assembly) is near by and they still have tire shredders and barbed wire to protect the work force and their cars. All so true, but different tools for different jobs. Claw hammer, 3 lb sledge and 5 lb sledge. I kept my 2013 Avalanche because it is the best for all of my needs. 4 link rear, because it's really a suburban, so it rides great all the time. Yes I give up some load capacity but that's why they make trailers. I have an R&R aluminum trailer like yours and when I pull my Camaro around it gets about 13 mpg at 65 mph. Better than the 8mpg if I drove the L78 Camaro! 21 mpg without the trailer. I can also open up the lower mid gate and put a 10' ladder in the truck, and close the tailgate. That is why GM brought it back on the EV pickup. Still I am buying a low mile 98 Silverado 3/4 ton 4WD pick up for the big jobs. 98 last year of the real steel bodied trucks. ... View more

I worked at GM and spent many an hour on that design staff patio, never saw that car. The quad 4, with design help from Porsche no less, was DOA. I drove the 200 hp versions and they were just a noisy shaky mess. The air filter was way down low so they also had a habit of sucking in water. GM brought out the SOHC and it was even worse. The other abomination was the DOHC 3.4L V6. Predictable when you take an over sized (stared at 2.8L) 60 degree motor and add all the complexity and weight. The X car was not the disaster you make it out to be. I had an HO 2.8 in an X11. Yes the 4 speed manual was a clunky mess but with 140 hp it won SCCA that year and 3 series BMW's or base Toyota Supra's could not run away from me. Now the brakes were another story! Also I own one of every generation Camaro, have to say the Gen 3 car is turning into my favorite, and to think GM, the kings of V8's, almost walked away from what would be come the LS and new LT series engines. ... Most hard core car guys have a good barn find missed story. My was in 1980 visiting a friend in Louisville Ky on a weekend. We went to school together at Xavier, he was big into 2002 tii BMW's, I still liked American muscle. He went back to Louisville and I took a job in Pittsburgh....anyway while driving around we came upon a 70 Dino at a repair shop. It was parked out front and was open (ahh the good old days!). Looked good, although the steering wheel was broken in half. Ended up calling on Monday. Owner blew the engine, got mad broke the steering wheel. He offered it to me for $10,000. Lots of comments about the Hummer. Rightfully so the other vehicles here were short term players. The Hummer brand was woefully mismanaged. One big, and possibly planned, mistake was not allowing or putting the Duramax in the H2. It was just to heavy, had giant torque sucking tires, and the square shape for the LS2 (6.0L) to be efficient. The way the frame was built it would not go in without a lot of reworking, plus AM General was using the old GM diesel next door in the H1 and didn't want the new powertrain around. I drove the H2, it had a great ride but classic off roading small interior. FE was terrible, The Duramax would have made that passable. The H3 had all the potential in the world, but the platform was eliminated. ... View more
