I got sidelined a bit telling that story so I wanted to come back to talk about my love for the Z8 …. It was/is IMHO the perfect Sports Car… Beautiful, Perfectly Sized for 2, Fast but not blindingly so , Great Brakes and Handling abilities, Supremely comfortable again IMHO the positioning of the seats , pedals , shifter ,The gauges are nearly perfectly positioned in their very different manner , It was beautifully designed&built ….It Sounded , again IMHO perfect, Not too loud… I’m not surprised it’s value has gained tremendously over the past decade…I was kinda sad when my friend would get rid of his cars and buy a new one especially so in the case of his Ford GT AND the Z8 but always some excitement mixed in because I would be driving something new… He also let me drive everything he had ALOT.. ... A friend of mine did very well in the “electronics” business and while he lived very well he spent an inordinate amount of money in buying Hi-end cars of the 1990’s and early 2,000’s… He would buy a new car every six months or so , always wanting the newest Porsche Turbo, He had at least 10 between 1996-2010 , 3-4 AMG Mercedes , A Ford GT , 4 Bentley’s and other great cars… one time he had a Bentley GT , Porsche Turbo and an Z-8 in his garage… He decided that we should go for a “ride” where each of us would drive a separate car… He chose the Turbo (Black/black so I settled for the Z8 silver/black… It was a very late night in northern New Jersey when we started racing thru the local roads , State Highways & a scenic Highway (PIP) located in the area.. reaching speeds of up to 120mph and passing each other on less than safe conditions for about 30 minutes…Yes it was dangerous and totally illegal and if caught we probably could have gone to jail , lost our licenses and paid thousands in fines and insurance surcharges but we had a ball and if I had the opportunity I’d do it again in a second…My friend and I had many hi speed tours , He also had a rare White/LBlue 308 Spyder but we never squared off against each other as we did that one night… ... An EV Corvette looks like every other hi end SUV from Aston Martin , Lamborghini or even the Pedestrian looking Porsche SUV’s , not very promising… That said there are some really great looking and performing internal Combustion Vettes that are coming our way… My suggestion is that forgo the EV to your next “family carrier” and stick with push-rod engines for your sports cars… ... Ferrari OEM parts have Tolerance Issues… Here I thought the only time the Ferrari Dealers would take your head off was for the $35,000 timing chain rip-off… I know this article is about replacing the balky & poorly engineered F1 tranny’s on 360’s & 430’s with a nice 6sp. manual but I want to point to conversation in a different direction …. How is it that “regular” car makers like Toyota can put together cars that last upwards of 200,000 miles without major systems failing but the exotic makers can’t engineer and manufacture systems in their cars that dont/can’t last thousands of miles while charging a premium price? My Father was a Ford Dealer in the Late 60’s to the mid 70’s… I drove pretty much every Ford Muscle Car of that era… While my main ride was a 70 Boss 302 which in MHO was the best all round muscle car of the era the fastest was a cousin of the written Mercury Cyclone GT… It was a 1970 brite red Torino GT with the 428 CobraJet engine 4speed/4.33 gears and a “shaker” hood…Cant remember if it had the Factory Drag-Pack option but it was Great looking and Great sounding …My older brother who worked at my dads dealership called to tell me that this new Torino just came in so went to look at it and DRIVE it…The dealership was located on a semi isolated state highway and there was a section of the highway where we “tested” the interesting cars…It wasSlightly downhill , there was a straight section about 2 miles…The acceleration was breathtaking, almost Brutal … Beautiful & Fast a great car … ... Since 1981 I’ve owned/leased 10 “3” Series BMW’s … It’s a simple reason why but it’s definitely not the same as Rob Siegel’s , I didn’t own all 10 at the same time …. It’s because they were all excellent cars that provided more than adequate performance as a daily driver, great quality build, adequate size ( MY perfect sized car) , great styling and ergometry…Although the newer 3 models have gotten a bit portly and the 2’s are my fav. I agree , There’s nothing better than the Sound&Fury of an internal combustion engine….Some auto makers have tried to pipe into the interior sound&fury but it sounds FAKE to me… my friend had a brand new 2001 Ferrari 360 Modena Spyder and it didn’t make a difference… whenever we went for a ride top up / top down we always preferred the aural scream of the flat-plane crankshaft engine along with the other mechanical sounds over the Hi-End Stereo he installed in the car.. ... In my early - late teens I worked in a hi end menswear store that had “moneyed” customers… One of them was a Doctor that had a 69 Ghibli , Lt Blue w/ White interior …Because of limited parking at the store I occasionally moved the car around the parking lot and local streets…I never went into more than 2nd gear and maybe 35-40mph…it was my first experience with driving an exotic… it was really Beautiful , Luxurious, it sounded amazing , The smell of the leather interior was intoxicating…The doctor had it less than a year citing many quality build/maintenance issues…His next car was in my eyes a perfect replacement…LT.Blue 1970 Corvette w/LT1 engine option.. ... In the early 2000’s I acquired an 84 Black/Black 928 with Lo miles 42,000 for a nearly 20 y/o car…It was in great condition… I Loved everything about it … Beautiful, Fast , Roomy , great sounds … I found a mechanic nearby that specialized in Hi-End autos , he always was working on something exotic and he wasn’t anymore expensive than the Mercedes dealership I used for my CClass I had st the time… I put about 20,000 traveling the NE in 2 Years … When the car hit 60,000 miles the required maintenance and the “little” things that popped up to replace/fix started to add up… Without a problem I spent about 10K in a few months of the 60,000 mark , nothing big just maintenance and those little things… I figured the “big” things … Engine W/ timing chain & fuel injection , A/C , Trans we’re going to be going and I couldn’t handle the Bills I was going to face … I traded it in for a M3 Convertible, a great car in itself but I have a special place in my heart for the one Porsche I owned… ... My father was a General Manager for a Chevrolet dealership in the early-mid 60’s … when they came out with Corvair he got my mother every version of the Corvair… 2&4 doors , convertible & wagon . She/we loved them all… but it had quirky handling characteristics ALA the Porsche 911… if you weren’t careful you could bring the rear-end around very quickly … it happened one time with my mom and us 4 kids in the car…A 360 just like that… we also had a special Corvair , a 63 turbo Monza convertible / 4 speed… a GREAT little sports car that should have been further developed but I guess Chevy thought it would siphon sales from the Corvette and so when Naders book came out they didn’t do any further development and allowed the Corvair to die due to dwindling sales… ...
