Just pulled a double axle enclosed Uhaul trailer behind my Honda Odyssey 400 miles one way to load up my kid's college furnishings. With 3 kids I've done this numerous times - and done many family road trips fully loaded and a waverunner in tow. With winter here for many of us - don't forget to double check the freeze protection of your cooling system. My 68 Chevelle was shipped up from AZ to WI 2 weeks ago and just before sub-zero weather arrived I decided to double check the freeze protection and was surprised to learn it was just protected to about 30 degrees. Turns out the guy in AZ had drained the radiator to replace the temp gauge sensor and just filled back with water - not thinking about the cold the car would soon experience in my unheated garage. Per the article and the video - that photo was taken in 2016 by Ryan Brutt and used as the cover picture for his 2017 book. The 1979 license plate (with mid 80s renewal sticker) was cleaned for that picture to give an idea of how long it had been stored. Have a little faith! 🙂 ... View more

I should have clarified - it's actually the garage door opener/track that is the main obstacle. The windshield frame clears that when pulled in forward. Also with top down less chance I'd inadvertently raise the garage door into the roof of the car while on the lift.  ... View more

I recently purchased a 4 post lift from a neighbor who was moving and plan to raise my Chevelle convertible up on it for winter storage - to allow some of the outdoor/summer items to be stored underneath. Due to the overhead door tracks, I can raise the car higher if I store it with the top lowered (but would cover the car with a car cover). HOWEVER, I worry that storing it with the top down would not be good for the top (e.g. creases, material not being stretched, etc). Anybody know? ... View more

For instance, does converting to electronic ignition on a 50's - 60's era car cost around $500 or $2,000? Or, FI around $1,000 or $5,000? 1) I mean the ability to have a single car that can handle all my around-town driving AND allow me to drive all day when I need to visit a friend, relative, take a vacation/weekend get-away or take a kid to/from campus. 2) In addition, several times a year I will pull a trailer or a wave runner - and I know that any sort of towing will dramatically impact EV range. 3) With an ICE vehicle I NEVER have to worry about where and when to refuel. 4) No worries that my range will change due to winter cold or the drain of running the A/C on hot summer days.    5) When I visit friends/family or stay at a hotel - I never have to worry about how my vehicle will be charged overnight so it's ready to go the next morning (I just gas up my ICE when needed on the road). Bottom line, until the above issues are no longer a concern with EVs - I won't buy a pure EV - a hybrid maybe, but not an pure EV.   ... View more

At least in America - if the politicians dare try to mandate full EV (not talking about hybrids) BEFORE they offer the same cost and flexibility (range, capacity, hauling, 5 minute refueling time, etc) you will see a landslide win of the politicians who vow to repeal the ICE car ban. It will include all demographics - including those who: 1) can't afford an EV, 2) don't have a way of charging it (i.e. city dwellers who street park), 3) need towing capacity, 4) Need to make all day trips without adding multiple stops and potentially overnight stays.  I am fully confident that only the crazy "Green New Deal" Progressives would dare push an ICE car ban. I disagree assertion that it will be the automakers that dictate the move to EV. Consumer demand will dictate what is produced. Any car maker that tries to force their vision on an unaccepting market will see their sales plummet. If they have a sales slump for even a year because the majority of buyers don't want what they are offering - they will either change course or suffer the consequences. It'll be very interesting to see if Jaguar sticks to their claim to go all electric by 2023. If "All Electric" doesn't include hybrids, I expect they will either back-pedal or file for bankruptcy within a few years. ... View more

It's an interesting and fun exercise, but as Toyota has stated several times now - the march to pure electric (i.e. non hybrids) is not going to happen anytime soon because there are many infrastructure hurdles as well as range issues. Many people can't afford the luxury of having a car that can't make an occasional (or frequent) all day drive without stopping for extended charging. So until pure electrics offer the same versatility that ICE or hybrid cars do - at a similar price - any American politicians who try to force pure electric on us will be unemployed quickly. Similarly, car makers who stop producing ICE cars prematurely will see their sales plummet and the responsible executives will be seeking unemployment.
