Last Fall at a Road America DE we had cold weather and too much rain. The mornings were overcast, moisture hung in the air and we skipped the first sessions in favor of more coffee and Egg McMuffins. I've always regarded rainy DEs as missed opportunities and (somewhat) wasted money. Also, I was in my first 911, a lovely 997.2, and, although I had track insurance, I was not going to "risk it" or get my precious interior wet. Because that would stupid. But on the second day at RA, one guy in a comically loud and kinda ratty 993 stayed out for his last session of the day. From our spot in the lower paddock I watched him climb the hill out of T5, lap after lap, circulating at the Mesopotamian Cradle of U.S. Motorsports alone. On his track. It dawned on me that I was, after many years, witnessing the only person to have actually won a DE. And I travel to events now with contractor size plastic bags and bungee cords.
