Help us reach our goal of teaching 500 drivers in 50 days how to drive a manual!
There’s nothing like driving a stick shift – feeling the gears change, connecting with the car and the road – and we’re on a mission to get more people experiencing that excitement.
It all starts on National Stick Shift Day (July 16). We’ll be kicking off the day at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, celebrating 10 years of the Hagerty Driving Experience (our program designed to teach young drivers how to operate a vehicle with a manual transmission)!
You can take part no matter where you are, anytime from July 16 – Sept. 3 - here's how:
Thank you for joining the fun - Never Stop Driving!
Finally got my wife driving my '62 Corvette, 4-speed. Thank you for the challenge.
I finally got my wife to drive my’62 Corvette, 4 speed. Thank you for your help.
Father/daughter day in a 72 Beetle.
I like it, and this will make it more fun. Almost like graduating and getting an award for the accomplishment!
Here’s our 15 year old grandson with his feet on the pedals of my ‘89 Dodge Raider. We’re at an abandoned portion of Camp Atterbury, Indiana
Been wanting to teach my fiancee for years to drive stick shift. Thanks for giving me an excuse to do so!
Here's me teaching her on my Golf GTI (taken in a very large parking lot on LI).
He got it on the first try!
This wasn't too bad since my Father was a Driver Education Instructor at School. Since he taught me, I think it is only fair, I teach Ivette.
this is my grandson, Riley, who has driven a manual shift, but to give him the full experience ( rod actuated brakes, foot starter, no power steering and no syncros) we put him in our Model A pickup, it has been in the family since new and he is the 5th generation to drive it. This truck is the only known vehicle to have driven on all 3 Tacoma narrows bridges as it crossed Gallip Gertie the day before it blew down
Ever since I started restoring my 1960 beetle in 2011, I imagined the days in the (at the time distant) future when I would start teaching my girls to drive it. July 17 2021 was the first! My oldest turned 16 this year, and has been driving long enough that she felt ready to learn to drive the 61 year old stick shift with dad. We had a lot of laughs, a couple of killed starts, but happily for me, almost no gear grinding. I am so proud of her, and I look forward to more of these rides with her.
Here’s to the rest of you!

First off, I love this movement! Today I taught my girlfriend to drive stick in my Mk6 GTI. She did great and didn't even stall once. Better than I can say on my first time driving stick!
Cheers Everyone,
Dakota and Emma

Teaching my daughter to drive stick shift on my 67 big block corvette. Learning in a school parking lot. She needs a lot more practice before she is ready for the road!
The smile on my son's face when he smoothly shifted into first...for the first time. He was so proud of himself and I think he understands why dad insists on having a manual!
Fun times, teaching stick!
What a wonderful idea!! This spurred me to make sure I taught my daughter to drive stick before she heads off to college in the fall. Two-ish hours of lessons so far & I'd say she's almost ready to take it off the quiet side streets! #nationalstickshiftday #bmw2002Eliza at the controls
My granddaughter can drive practically anything you put her in, or on. ATV's, dirt bikes, trucks, doesn't matter. As you can see in the photo, we were actually driving down the road in my truck when I took this shot. Rolling down the road in my F150.
She did a great job!
Finally found a reason for daughter to learn about the clutch - She wants to drive my Morris Minor so she is learning on our manual transmission Civic 🙂
Rachel,
What a great plan - 500 new drivers in 50 days! You should make this an ongoing campaign. Here is a picture of me teaching my son to drive manual. We are mastering my Subaru Outback in this photo - Before we move on to my vintage cars insured with Hagerty!!! He has decided he wants his first car to be MANUAL! So I think I am doing a successful job!!! SAVE THE MANUALS!

Finally taught my son to drive stick in my 1970 MGBGT. Didn't take long for him to get the hang of it, and the smile on his face when he did was priceless. I may never get to drive my car again!
Started my two youngest grandsons Samuel and Nathaniel on our 90 Miata. Can’t reach the pedals yet but can shift while sitting on Poppa’s lap! Of course all done in the safety of a parking lot’ Lol!

Great day for lesson 1.

Great time teaching my son the joys of driving my 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider! We didn't make it out of the parking lot yet, but that'll be in the next lesson. He'll just have to learn how to manage that infamous second gear synchro...

what a great idea. Took this neighbor out for a lesson and he did a great job. I had tons of fun sharing the skill on a beautiful Wisconsin afternoon.
I surprised my girlfriend with a 1969 Beetle for her 50th Birthday. She's always wanted a bug. So we've been out on the weekends getting her skills honed in for driving her little dream car. It's been a great experience for both of us, she's been learning the joy and fun of a manuel trans while I get to share my live of classic cars with her.
Teaching my grandson to use a 6 speed!
Such a great idea, Rachel.
I took my 18 year old son out on Friday and taught him a few things. He did great! Next up, I'll teach him to heel & toe when he has the right shoes on.
