Since 100 degrees F is well above the operational ceiling of this car, I had to go down to the ocean to shoot it before the heat wave hit. So I know I'm kinda disqualified.
I had always wanted a Mercedes W111 convertible. Financially, it was out of reach. I owned a 1971 flat-windscreen Super Beetle convertible after moving here and when my wife got pregnant she insisted I sell it. It was a high price to pay. We had driven it to San Diego for Comic-con in summer 1994 and there was a place called Affordable VIP Classics down there. In the basement was a one-owner 1966 250 SE with a sunroof—not the cabriolet but you know, pillarless, and it was original but for having been fitted with the low grille and hood from a 1972 model. They offered me $5000 for the beetle in trade for 8k for the Merc, and I took it. The owner said he meant to keep it on the premises for his brother to use when he visited from the UK.
So we drove it home and left “Bob,” the Beetle stayed behind, broken hearted. It happens they’d forgotten to load the spare tire and wheel rim and I drove the Merc back to pick it up. When I got there, I asked where Bob was. “He’s on a flatbed headed to New Orleans, sold him for $10,000,” the owner replied. Dumbfounded I asked about the story about his brother. He shrugged and said, “Hey, I’m a used car salesman.”
I still own the car and drive it at least once a month. Love it as I do, my ardors increased after seeing the convertible version of car in the film GET SHORTY. I did a restoration paint job to the original Delft Blue but still have the beaten leather seats with horsehair stuffing and magnificent crazed-finished burlwood dash. A friend who wanted a car like mine started shopping around for one, and I actually encountered the GET SHORTY car but its shock towers were rusted out and I waved her off it. I also have a LONGER story I wrote about entering this car in a Ferrari rally. His name is Klaus. I don't really qualify for the hat having had to shoot the car in advance, but maybe you'll give it to me for a good back story. Drove through Car Week and the Dawn Patrol years ago and sorry you all couldn't do it in person this year. But thanks for the virtual fly-in!

Hey,
Thanks for the nudge to get out and drive this morning. My son just got his driving permit, and today was his first chance to pilot my 2000 'Vette. I had a hard time posting via my phone earlier, so please note this reply. The picture was taken abut 8:30 AM. I think he deserves the hat. Hopefully the first of many!
