The BMW 850CSi is not a car that most people know. Even BMW fans might not have heard of it or seen one. Only 225 examples were sold in the U.S. when the car was new, although some 1,510 were produced in total. What exactly makes the 850CSi so special, and why did one recently sell for $147,500 on the new online auction platform Cars & Bids?

These are great looking vehicles for sure. Paying the maintenance bill to keep one on the road though... yikes! Same with a Porsche 928. Better have a very healthy budget.
The M70 was typical of the small displacement V12's of the era (i.e. Jaguar). Not really powerful but a smooth extended powerband. Working for GM we put an M70 into a 1990 Caprice Classic ( yes GM did a lot of wild stuff back then). I was driving it on 475 near Flint Mi. and wanted to see what it would do. At WOT it was really disappointing even from a 45 mph rolling start.... but the power just kept coming. At 120 mph, and still accelerating, the front end of the car was so light steering became useless. I lifted so not to have to explain why the car hit a bridge abutment at triple digit speeds (assuming I would have survived!). Part of the story why GM never developed a V12.
While the 850 CSi commands out of this world prices, a regular 850Ci can be had for a small fraction of that. You can have all of the styling (and all of the maintenance!) for much less.
