The BMW Z8 had 507 reasons to exist

If the media agrees on one thing, it's that it will beg to differ. So it was at the launch of the BMW Z8, in 2000. After driving it for the first time, Autocar concluded, "Hard to think of a surer recipe for success".

I very much enjoyed this piece, James. Although it certainly makes me sad that BMW is unwilling or unable to make beautiful, tasteful cars like this anymore.

Part Jaguar E-type, part Miata, and with a dash (fender vent) from Aston-Martin.
Still — one helluva car! BMW really struts its stuff when they want to.

Sure wish I'd thought of a horse named Rich Strike. Oh, for a Time Machine...

Agree on the cars BMW makes today, I have owned several BMWs and still own a 2001 Z3M and 2005 330XI. I keep the 330XI because I just enjoy driving it as a daily driver even though I own much newer and nicer vehicles. However, the current BMW models just don’t excite me with their styling and just too much technology.

Don’t forget the lack of steering feel in the current cars. Such a shame.

They've gone from "The Ultimate Driving Machine" to "Beep-boop". 😞

The Ultimate Toaster Machine?

The Ultimate Software Machine?

Not sure which or is it both.

I have always thought this was one of the most stunning designs of the era. It's one of those "lottery cars" for me, and very few of those tend to be expensive cars in my personal book. It's a car that if I owned it my heart would swell every time I opened the garage door. And I agree that it really makes modern BMWs look like the stylistic failures that they are. If I had one of those I'd open that same garage door and recoil.

I love the Z8. One of the nicest interiors on a BMW period. My only issue is the gauge pod is in the center. Beyond that it is a gorgeous car in person. Sounds great and is quick.

A friend of mine did very well in the “electronics” business and while he lived very well he spent an inordinate amount of money in buying Hi-end cars of the 1990’s and early 2,000’s… He would buy a new car every six months or so , always wanting the newest Porsche Turbo, He had at least 10 between 1996-2010 , 3-4 AMG Mercedes , A Ford GT , 4 Bentley’s and other great cars… one time he had a Bentley GT , Porsche Turbo and an Z-8 in his garage… He decided that we should go for a “ride” where each of us would drive a separate car… He chose the Turbo (Black/black so I settled for the Z8 silver/black… It was a very late night in northern New Jersey when we started racing thru the local roads , State Highways & a scenic Highway (PIP) located in the area.. reaching speeds of up to 120mph and passing each other on less than safe conditions for about 30 minutes…Yes it was dangerous and totally illegal and if caught we probably could have gone to jail , lost our licenses and paid thousands in fines and insurance surcharges but we had a ball and if I had the opportunity I’d do it again in a second…My friend and I had many hi speed tours , He also had a rare White/LBlue 308 Spyder but we never squared off against each other as we did that one night…

I got sidelined a bit telling that story so I wanted to come back to talk about my love for the Z8 …. It was/is IMHO the perfect Sports Car… Beautiful, Perfectly Sized for 2, Fast but not blindingly so , Great Brakes and Handling abilities, Supremely comfortable again IMHO the positioning of the seats , pedals , shifter ,The gauges are nearly perfectly positioned in their very different manner , It was beautifully designed&built ….It Sounded , again IMHO perfect, Not too loud… I’m not surprised it’s value has gained tremendously over the past decade…I was kinda sad when my friend would get rid of his cars and buy a new one especially so in the case of his Ford GT AND the Z8 but always some excitement mixed in because I would be driving something new… He also let me drive everything he had ALOT..
