Between 1904 and 1912, Service worked as a bank teller in Whitehorse and Dawson City and dashed off Rudyard Kipling poems like The Call of the Wild and The Shooting of Dan McGrew. Thank you Paul and Jeff, great and fun read. I'm curious, the black Mercedes in picture 24 appears to have no mods, except snow tires? I wonder how it fared. Also is that yellow car in picture 40 a Ford Capri?!
Had never heard of this rally before! Now I'm fully determined to be on it in 2024. Also have my mind set on doing it in a pre-1980 vehicle. A few years ago I drove a 70s Beetle from Portland, OR, to Traverse City, MI, in the middle of winter. Coming through eastern Oregon, Idaho and Montana it was about -18 Fahrenheit and our Beetle had no heat. Fortunately, my brother and I were (mostly) well-prepared with down jackets, sleeping bags, tool kit, plenty of snacks/water just in case we broke down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. It was an awesome adventure in hindsight. I don't mind being cold so this rally is right up my alley in terms of risk, danger, and potential for awesome stories and photos.

To Russthek, I prefer Ford, It was sold as a Ford in Europe, Built in Germany and imported here, all badgings removed (except Capri) and sold at Mercury Dealerships as a stand alone model to be more upscale as they pushed the European heritage quite hard. Of course then we had the Fox body Mercury Capri shared with Mustang then the little Mazda platform Capri from Australia.
Great story, Paul and Jeff! You really captured a lot of what this rally is about. Personal opinion: I'd say, "Don't drive at night on a highway that was just opened unless the coolest hang out on the whole event is at the other end." The bar at Eagle Plains is always an evening to remember. Erica was going to close at 9:30 pm but we persuaded her to stay open. She didn't kick us out until 1:00 am! She also taught us a new phrase. New to Garth and I, anyway, "you're hooped"
First of all, I'd have liked to know how the GMC did in this "rally". Secondly, how competitive is this thing if a 2wd 1973 Mercury CAPRI can "win" it? Thirdly, you needed wool "hats"? I don't even know what that is, but I know a wool stocking cap that you can pull down over your ears and that insulates even when wet, is what you really need.
