Rides from the Readers: 1974 Land Rover Series III

Today's featured vehicle is a 1974 Land Rover Series III. The third generation of British Leyland's hard-working off-roader first hit American shores in 1971 and, thanks to stringent U.S. regulations and the first OPEC fuel crisis, didn't come stateside at all after 1974. These trucks received a handful of cosmetic changes—a plastic  (rather than a wire mesh) grille piece and new trim around the fender-mounted headlights. However, the biggest news was mechanical: the transmission boasted synchros in all forward gears and British Leyland replaced the Series IIA's generator with an alternator.
