Review: 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn

If you own and enjoy a newer front-drive compact, you probably owe a measure of gratitude to Volkswagen. For a good fifteen-year stretch starting in the late 1990s with the debut of the Mk IV Golf, VW set the benchmark for refinement and sophistication in the compact segment.

At least it still has some physical controls. You can tell the energy from VW isn't really in this model.

An unfortunate sign of the times as auto makers move all their resources to producing "green" EVs. We should feel fortunate VW handed the US a manual in the latest Golf R and GTI.

The writing was on the wall when VW Group announced more than a decade ago their intent to become the world's largest automaker. The only way they could achieve that was through cost-cutting and dumbing down. For a period of 22 years, my wife and I always owned at least one VW. For the last 14 years, we've owned 0 -- the things they eliminated in their quest for growth were what had drawn us to their cars. It's a shame.
