Someday the gas station will be a rarity, but we have a couple of decades for that. If they started selling 100% electric cars from today forward you'd still be selling a lot of gas for 10-15 years, and the change to electric cars will take longer than that, no matter how optimistic politicians are.

It took two and a half decades for the automobile to replace the horse as the dominant form of transportation in this nation. Even at that, for some few purposes the horse held on till the early 1950's in some places. I recall milk and ice deliveries by horse-drawn vans well into the late 1940's. But they are now gone entirely. The conversion from ICE to electric will most likely be somewhere in the same time frame. But the conversion is already well along, and is inexorable. The manufacturers have taken that decision, and are not about to reverse it. It's not that ICE engines will soon disappear altogether. But they will become rarer over time, and eventually will have the same status as horses do now. They will be owned mostly as a hobby, be displayed at shows all over the country, and will be run mostly on tracks on dedicated days.

Motor Man I agree.I love the sound of a strong V8,but I also love Mother Earth. Right now she's in trouble.If I wasn't 74 and have a paid off truck I'd be looking at electric trucks.

Electric GT40 please. I don't have an EV yet, but I do find it odd that so many people that like performance/sports cars are so vocally anti-EV. 0-60 in 5 seconds with the gasoline-powered engine or 0-60 in 2.something seconds with the electric motor. I guess most people just want it to *sound* like they're going fast without actually needing to be quick. 🙂 Really, it's just range and recharge times that are the only issues needing to be perfected.

But range and recharge issues are everything. I can travel across the entire nation now and have done it with little sleep and breaking speed limits in two days and a few hours. Electric for anything other than local is impractical. Build an electric that can regenerate it's own system to never need charging. Oh wait that is a no-brainer people, they are purposely not designing it because they will make their money at recharge stations. You can not tell me that they can not make a car that recharges itself into perpetuity. Want to sell me a car then make that one.

For better range and recharge just carry a Honda generator in the trunk of your EV - of course it might take 24 hours and a couple gallons of gas to recharge but then your on your way to Disney Land !!!

lots of talk about the future of electric cars, however isn't our main method of producing still nuclear?
Fukushima has been spewing out massive amounts of radio active waste into the ocean and atmosphere for 12 years now, with no end in site. More harm to the environment (global warming) than all the internal combustion engines ever produced to date.
We still have no idea how to deal with spent rods.
Chernobyl did not just go away.
Electricity at the moment is Anything but, . . . Green.

"Petroleum" means some kind of liquid fuel. Natural Gas is a fossil fuel, but naturally occurring -- not the same as LPG, which is a gas byproduct of refining oil.

once they figured out how to draw the Hydrogen to the motor on demand.
But i wonder what the plan is for creating all this Tesla energy when the time comes.
I fear they sell us on "CLEAN" nuclear energy.
France now is about 70% of total annual electricity generation from nuclear energy.
20% in the U.S. perhaps, but other countries aren't as nearly diversified.
Japan was going for broke, and the price we'll now ALL pay for that folly is far beyond repair.

My 2003 F150 runs solely on Natural Gas, in fact if it wasn't for the lack of fill stations or available home compressors I'd keep the old girl going as long as I'm alive (and rust doesn't take over). Here in Canada it is not even a choice in fact most are unaware of the existence of NG fueled personal vehicles. Cleanest fuel ever next to electric! Without the by-products of gas or "diseasal", these engines run extremely clean. Again why are we not putting mega research into Hydrogen in a large scale? Make what we have more affordable?

There will be some call for fossil fuels well into the future. Commuters may go to predominantly electric, but there are still many things that require more range and power than rechargeable electric vehicles can practically supply. There are ways around this, such as tractor/trailer rigs with easily swappable battery packs (like some electric fork-lifts have used since the 70s at least -- with heavy lead-acid battery packs) to increase range and time between trips. Lots of infrastructure to build though, and that's expensive -- more expensive than cleaning up fossil fuel emissions. With ranges coming up over the last 10 years I could possibly use an electric pickup (with a 200-250 mile range) in my home repair business. Lots of stops and starts sometimes, but I average 80 miles a day, with occasional days of 150 miles. The range is estimated under "normal" driving conditions. I would expect my driving to require a little more than normal, especially with occasionally hauling heavy loads or towing a small trailer. The longer trip days are more "normal" driving since they are usually jobs that are further away, or further from my material supply source. But I'm not eager to get one. I'll be retiring in 3-4 years, and cutting back a little in two. I don't see an electric in my future, though I'm not opposed to it as long as it will suit my needs. A more likely scenario is that people will use electrics for their daily driving, then rent a gasoline car for longer trips and vacations. I see a mix of electric and ICE cars on the road for a very long time... for various reasons. A bit different from horse vs. car, but not that much.

Not surprised someone did this , but why makes no sense. A major part of the joy of owning a GT is hearing that thunderous V8 inches behind your shoulder. With China and India building over 600 new coal fired power plants the only thing converting a replica GT to electric will do is make you feel better about yourself if you believe all the hype.

i'm just saying nuclear plants seem like THE most toxic methods of producing electricity we've ever invented. They've already done more harm to the planet than ALL the cars ever produced.
Nobody seems to concerned about what Fukushima is doing to the planet, every year.
Or am i missing something?

Does anyone know about converting a V8 to water? (hydrogen).
I thought big rigs were already going there.

Blasphemy, maybe, but if the world runs out of crude and gas is no longer sold tomorrow, I would convert my '69 Mustang into electric. There may be other alternatives, like biofuel, also.

Good thing for us living today, though, is that, most likely, we won't be running out of gas in our lifetime. There are suggestions about the end of gasoline, not due to lack of crude, but due to environmental, political, or other reasons.
