In the market for a sleeper on this 4/27?

Happy 4/27! As we've mentioned in previous articles celebrating Chevrolet's 7.0-liter big-block, the 427 caries a certain connotation. It's a muscle car engine that even the 454 can't touch.

Of course, not all 427s are equal. Quite a few years back I spun a rod bearing on my 1968 SS 396 and was left looking for a donor motor to get me going until I could rebuild the original motor 'right'. I bought a 427 'truck' motor from a guy that had it in his pick-up, freshly rebuilt. I jumped at it, spend a weekend swapping it into the 'Camino (had to drill and tap a boss for the clutch cross shaft and put in a pilot bearing), but everything went smoothly. Until I got out on the road. It ran smooth enough, and had tons of torque, but it would not spin faster than 4500 rpm. After some belated research, I found out my motor came from 1980s five ton dump truck. Designed for low end grunt the manifold runners and head ports are tiny. Of course fifteen years later, that motor is still running strong and the original is still under a tarp in the corner of my garage.

With enough torque, you probably don't need much over 4500 revs, do ya?  My Pontiac 455 peaks it's HP curve at 4800, but by that time, the torque has tires frying.

Yes, the reason it is still in the El Camino is that I haven't had a reason to take it out yet. Runs strong on regular gas.  But I still yearn for that high compression 396, it was fast.

Nice sense of humour here. Calling that 1966 Biscayne wagon in the pic a
"sleeper".

Where can I buy the wagon for 16k? I’ll leave in the morning!

I have had a lot of wagons in my time and would love to have another one & that '66 Biscayne would perfect, Thanks!

Other than being too lowered I'll take that '66 Wagon pictured at the top. So lovely.
