Hurricane I-6 EPA numbers, NASCAR names 2023 Hall of Fame class, will.i.AMG?

Intake: The EPA has released fuel-economy figures for the first application of Stellantis' all-new Hurricane inline-six, the Grand Wagoneer.

Two takes here. 


#1 NASCAR needs to get these older drivers in while they are with us. Don't wait till they die. 


#2 The new Hurricane engine is a good deal but limited to what it will fit. I also wonder what the weight is. 


But be prepared it will lack the V8 sound. I get 21 MPG with 310 HP. 


The Hemi was not a high mileage engine. The transition to EV is going to take time so if you need MPG some ICE tricks will be played till they make the full transition. 


17 MPG at that HP is good 



Depends on how you drive a Hemi.
Ours, Grand, 3.45 gears, 65RFE, 22ish on the Highway, steady state to San Diego or OC at 75. Pure city, 17 if my wife drives, 13 max if Im driving. I drove it for a week while she was visiting relatives, barely got 13. Granted every rush-hour on-ramp stop light was a full throttle delight. In the true urban kid-shuttle family vehicle existence of city and highway, 18-19 mpg, week after week.

But the staggering display was towing a midsized rear drive sedan on a trailer from the dirty south to AZ. Just over 5,000 lbs, in tow haul, several times over 17 mpg. That car wasn’t like towing a boat, it was square, stuck up over the height of the Jeep and was just as wide. 65 mph the whole way, no issues.

In a world of $4.00+ per gallon gasoline, 14-city/20-highway mpg is pretty dismal.

I guess its way better than a 454 with a carb and a 3 speed auto. How else would you haul a boat and 6 people 400 miles to the cabin?

4.56 gears weren’t bad when the limit was 55. Most folks didn’t go much past 60 in traffic on the Iowa 2-lanes.

Try towing a trailer in SoCal, 55 is the limit 😉 everyone around you is running 80.

My 4.10 geared K25 GMC Suburban HATED life on those freeways. Towing a trailer gave me an excuse.

It's not amazing but consider the vehicle it's been tested in. You can surely expect to see 30mpg in a lighter more aero friendly package like an allegedly upcoming L car replacement.

It is a relative comparison.

My buddy likes 40mpg vehicles. For him, the thought of 15 mpg at $5 per gallon is mind blowing.

For me, I’m so used to blending race gas with pump gas, under $8/gallon doesn’t phase me.

Not surprised the new Hurricane engines only slightly better the hemi motors in the fuel economy race. Boost will always need fuel. I do wonder what the real world, not epa tests prove to be. Often the boosted motor is no better or slightly worse in fuel economy. Still 500+ hp and torque in a brick the numbers are not bad. has no taste. His vehicles are always ugly. His "vision" needs a complete eye exam.

Don't get too excited about the new Hurricane torque numbers. If it is tuned similarly to the Ford Ecoboost ( extremely likely to get the MPH numbers), the torque power range is likely only 1000 rpm wide. That's why 10 speed transmissions are made. Driveability is significantly compromised. The torque/horsepower spec is now virtually meaningless for comparison. You have to go to the curves from 1000 - 5000 rpm to get a real idea of how drivable the engine will be. Instead of flat these new engines look like sine waves with very narrow peaks.

Boosted engines tend to have a wide torque band, where as NA do not. Granted the Hemi had a 2-stage runner system which extends that torque curve, the boosted inline has a broad torque curve. It’s an under square inline 6, with boost, which is essentially the best combo for small displacement with big torque.

My 2021 Ram Laramie 4X4 with the 5.7 L Hemi E-torque gets 20 mpg (in real world driving on 87 octane), is rated to tow over 13,000 lbs, makes almost 400 hp, and is ridiculously (almost scary) fast.

If I'm not mistaken, the new Grand Wagoneer is built on a Ram platform. So exactly what "problem" were they trying to "fix" here, that would require a whole new engine design?

Run 89. It makes a difference. 91, none. 93 reportedly can cause problems. But we can’t buy that precious sweet engine love in the SW. 91 octane donkey whizz or race gas.

I agree about the 89 octane. When I'm out West and "regular" is something less than 87, I always go with the 89 or 91. And I get a couple more MPG.

I have had a few Grand Cherokees.
A 318 ZJ, a 4.0 WJ, a 4.7 WK, and a Hemi WK2. Next is probably going to be a V6 or I6 Wagoneer or Grand Cherokee L.

I’m not a “Jeep guy” or “MOPAR guy”, well…maybe I am now, rather Im a guy who didn’t really like trucks, enjoyed off-roading, camping, and hiking, and collected old garbage cars that need trailers to go from A to B. Jeeps were the better fit.

Torque matters and a boosted I6 with torque is a win.
Or V8 WK2 vs a relative’s Pentastar V6 Grand, the V8 is hands down better, except in fuel economy.
