One day after reports that the UK will ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars and trucks by 2030, California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed a similar plan, issuing an executive order that limits new car sales to zero-emissions vehicles starting in 2035. Newson, whose state is in the midst of its worst-ever wildfire season, says the plan will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming.

Stand by for an enormous opportunity in buying vehicles in Phoenix/Las Vegas, driving them to Ca and selling for more than the Az/Nv new vehicle price.
This executive order is silly. In the intervening 15 years, it will be changed, revised, shifted, put off, altered, exemptions added and loopholes built in, if it ever comes to pass, it will be a watered down version. The question really is if it is even relevant?
By 2035, it is very likely that virtually ALL cars being sold throughout the world are electric. Not because it's groovy and green, but because it makes sense. There still will be a market for exotic ICE vehicles and people will still have their classics to fall back on.
The sky isn't falling folks. Just another politician trying to score points with another pointless pronouncement.
Guess there will be charging stations, courtesy of the state of course, where people will be charged 50-100 bucks/hr to charge their hungry lithium poisoned batteries to go another 300 miles. Then when the batteries no longer maintain a charge and need to be replaced, owners of these vehicles will be soaked for 10s of thousands of dollars. Then, where do they dispose of these poisonous and heavy bricks of lithium nickel? Sounds like trouble to me. Trouble is what happens when socialist communists decide your future for you.
Very true, but the cost and inconvenience will be very real. Reminds me of when LED replacement lamps for common incandescent ones came out, and almost immediately the most socialist legislators passed laws banning incandescents to force people to use 60w equivalent LEDs that cost more for one lamp than a whole box of of incandescent. A year or two later, LED costs had dropped enormously, as is always the case with new tech, and people willingly switched over in many cases for the energy savings. The market will always promote actual value, while the government will always give sermons about how to spend other people's money.
Utopian madness continues. You, the voters, made it possible for geniuses, (with ZERO experience or knowledge on the subject), like this man effect lifes and future of millions of Citizens. Happy now?
Where is the charging infrastructure going to come from? California won't allow any new power generating plants to be built. Solar and wind cannot keep up with demand now, how is it going to in 15 years? Of course this is just a political ploy to make politicians feel good that they "did something". Man cannot make the climate change.
What am I missing? CA already can't always provide an uninterrupted supply of electricity. The PSE&G grid is already less than robust. Building more infrastructure takes forever because of regulations. Building more infrastructure is expensive. Electric vehicles are less than environmentally "friendly," despite what the general public has been led to believe. Again, what am I missing?
You're missing the huge taxes to pay for things that cannot make sense financially on their own. The ones that will make energy cost so much more, even the energy used by people earning less than $400k a year (but it's not a tax). The beauty of the plan is the more screwed up things get, the easier it is to buy votes with promises of free stuff i.e. wealth distribution.
Hey gaysum, when the glaciers melted centuries ago, who started their Hemi and away they went. Oh, wait, never happened. Because God created the cycles on Earth to freeze, then warm, then freeze, and warm.
You, melt the economy, chase business out of this once great state.
The statement, more vehicles in Calli means tons more state income by overcharging owners, has help generate massive amounts of money for your family to skim from.
President TRUMP needs to fire all wasteful politicians like you as you do not know how to run a successful business.
gaysum, you’re FIRED
The increasingly fragile electric grid in this country can barely sustain refrigerated air, and newsflash, windmills never generate as much energy as it takes to produce and erect them, and that's an engineering fact! Maybe they can blanket the left coast with solar panels and provide some shade at the same time in the next 15 years. Of course, with all the new and more inventive ways to play politics, this is the direct response to current Federal administrations clipping CARB's wings in the "States Rights" dictatorships that have evolved. And guess what, the people will decide how the future will unfold, even if it is a Mad Max movie. Next thing you know, they will decree old cars and trucks "gross polluters" and seek to ban them from the face of the planet!
I live in Calif and everytime I go east, I am amazed at lower gas prices. The idiots we have running this state have got to go but the next one will be worse. No new powerplants to be built, no new refineries built, no new roads built, pay to drive lanes everywhere, illegals get everything for free, high taxes, why am I here?
Gotta LOVE the politicians meddling in everything they shouldn't! They can't just ASK, encourage, and incentivise people to buys EVs, no they have to MANDATE it. Typical. They just love making more and more laws to take away our freedom!
Another thing to think about: With EVs, sure, they make no emissions. While driving. Teslas need their battery packs replaced every 6-8 years or so. Where do you think they all go when they're used? How do you think they are made? Do you think they're made with water and other harmless materials? NOPE! According to electrek.co, a Model S battery pack is 70% Lithium, 20% lead acid, and 10% other materials. And guess what? Lithium and lead are BOTH toxic! And I'm not even going to start on the motors themselves! Wise up world, this isn't the way to stop greenhouse emissions! It's just a way for people to make themselves rich off other people's ignorance! Plus, ya know, it gives the government more excuses to make more laws. Maybe instead we should all be driving Japanese Kei cars or mopeds? Not a 7 seat SUV for one person which will sit idling in a parking lot for an hour? Or big pickups only used like a sedan?
Don't get me wrong, I believe we need to watch our emissions, but I don't think this is the way to do it, if it is even the crisis the media makes it to be. Who knows if the climate is just going through a natural cycle? We only have a few hundred years of weather records out of several thousand to judge weather trends on Earth!
Moderators- Sorry if this one was too political, I really wanted to vent, and I can't stand people only hearing one side of the story.
And the common thing with all things mandated is that they get some sort of kickback for the mandation, and everyone makes money but the people being forced to do/use whatever they are mandating. The socialism in Illinois has gotten so bad that they are taxing people for leaving. I think the rate of people leaving is 20,000 a day. The problem? Instead of embracing the economic and personal freedom less socialist states offer, they vote the same way they did for 50 yrs that resulted in the wasteland they left.
The comments being written here confirm that unless our democratically elected representatives take leadership positions to influence the course of human progress and development, we will continue along the same self-destructive course driven by the economically powerful 0.1% who profit from fossil fuels. All of the comments expressing positions that are counter to what our strong, evidence-based scientific knowledge has discovered and predicts are the results of false propaganda from those that profit or those truly ignorant of how geophysical principles operate. The future well-being life on our planet depends on innovations in all forms of clean energy development especially nuclear to get us out of the death spiral caused by fossil fuels. We can innovate, it is our nature.
I respectfully disagree. We are being held economic prisoners by way of our illustrious government mandating that we don't use our own supply but buy it from countries that basically gouge everyone who does business with them. Why? It's simple. They MAKE MONEY on the backend of the behind the scenes sweetheart deals made with said countries.
The junk science being used by ex hippie culture college professors to indoctrinate that way of thinking, thereby forcing their communist viewpoints on the young and impressionable, has been proven false. Not by one opposing hypothesis, but by multiple studies that have gone beyond hypothetical rehotoric to an actual result. Show me a supposed study that claims we are on the eve of destruction with no actual data, and I will gladly show three per that a) name study sources, b) the control measures used to prove or disprove the theory and finally c) an actual beta result.
Just because it's in a Netflix or Michael Moore documentary doesn't make it fact. I would go further and point out that there has NOT been a documentary that I have ever seen that did anything more than validate said film maker's unscientific opinion.
This is Newsom being absurd. The first thing to do is to talk with the car makers to see if its possible and/or realistic to turn an entire industry around with appropriate investment, design, and tooling up that fast (it isn't). Next one should remember that Greenland was green 900 years ago and that all the hysteria about climate change has no basis in fact nor science, and that Old Road is correct regarding mankind's presumptions. There are many intelligent ways of controlling the way we're screwing up the enviornment, most of which Americans won't do. And there's another issue: One of the most difficult issues regarding climate change is that it can't be seen.
The implementation of EV only purchases will obviously drive down the demand for gasoline. At some point, the reduced demand will lead to refinery shutdowns. Since California has a special blend, at first, these shutdowns will just drive up the cost of gas. At some point, all the California refineries will stop producing gasoline (maybe other petroleum products too), which will leave the remaining gas powered vehicles/equipment in a bind; where to find gas? As a lady point, those that can least afford it will be hit the hardest (since they can barely afford $5,000 used cars).
Electric cars make less pollution, but the plants that generate the electricity make plenty of it. Fortunately for California most of those plants are located in other states. Alternative sources of electrical power sound like a great idea, but about the time that everyone plugs in their car to recharge it the sun goes down, eliminating solar power. Wind power is unreliable; at least in Northern California, except for a few select areas there is very little wind from May to October.
Um, solar and wind turbines and panels, contain a primary ingredient that is WAIT FOR IT....PETROLEUM. The mentality. I DONT GET IT?? Kinetic energy is stored in gas turbines, so how on earth is this going to work exactly? It is literally nonsense. How about not building new developments near refineries? And I concur, when you can't find a charging station and you're running out of charge sitting on the 101, an electric car helping the environment is the least of your concerns.
