C8 Corvette gets roofless Italian makeover, first Hurricane I-6 to Jeep, classic cars take Guggenheim
Intake: Ares, the Italian coachbuilder for the wealthiest of the wealthy, is taking the roof off of its midengine S1 Project to make the new S1 Speedster. (Nope, not related to Saleen.) A new windscreen ensures ideal open-air motoring, while the Speedster also highlights a modernized interior and new headlights as evolutionary changes to the Italian design, which debuted in hardtop form September of 2020. https://www.hagerty.com/media/news/the-manifold/2022-04-13/
A quick look at that Ares and I might think it was a McLaren. It certainly is better looking than a Corvette— but the bar is low. (I will refrain from making my standard complaint about the lack of a manual transmission. Wink.)
S! Project? You had me until I saw that iPad in the center dash. No thanks. It is a beautiful render of some nice maybe-mobile on the outside and almost on the inside.
As the owner of a '22 "low bar" C8, one thing I really like about the Ares is the more symmetrical interior. I've had my C8 for 4 months and have already had two complaints about the lack of space for the passenger. I understand "driver-centric" but . . . come on!
Leave it to the Italians to do what GM couldn't....make a Corvette beautiful and relevant. GM's Design Philosophy: "You should meet her. She's got a great personality...."
