The off-road racer known as Big Oly, built by Bill Stroppe and Parnelli Jones, won the Baja 1000 in 1970 and 1971 as well as the Mint 400 in 1973. It became the most valuable Ford Bronco in the world when it sold for $1.87 million last year.

Oh no!  That's a shame, but then again, you've gotta admire a guy who spends that kind of money on an off-road racing rig, and then RACES IT OFF-ROAD!  😁

It is not like it was all original sheet metal and unrestored. 

But with that said for that king of money I could have built a few copies to race and crash.

I’m conflicted as to how I feel about this one….
On one hand, I’m glad it’s doing what it was built to do. If I were there, I’d have been glad to see it back at it again.
On the other, it’s a one-of-a-kind, 2 million dollar, custom built, irreplaceable, historically significant vehicle. It would be a shame if it were wasting away in a museum but on the same token, a shame that it was driven by such a poor driver.

I guess guys buy million dollar Shelby cobras and SCCA race them too.
Perhaps it’s one of those “more dollars than sense” situations.

The value in these historic racers is in the chassis number or some kind of VIN number and not the sheet metal.  You can reskin and rework the chassis a dozen times and it is still Big Oly.
