11 of Zagato's greatest hits

Few coachbuilders have such a rich back catalogue as Zagato. Fewer still exist in the here and now. At a time when most styling Italian styling houses have gone to the wall, this most characterful of Italian carrozzerie is still rustling up new designs.

You have to admit the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale is a sweet looking car....

You are the Beholder. 😄

Maybe, except the back end.

The back end is Sort of a copy of a Cobra Daytona.

JohninNC

I agree, it's pretty nice looking, long low and lean, but looks like the designer fell asleep and woke up grumpy with only 2 minutes to finish up the back end design.

My favourite is the Aston Martin DB4 GT.
Bigcat75

Gotta agree with you, IMHO the Italian types have somewhat odd proportions, the DB4 is perfect

I photographed one of these last week. I guess I can’t post pictures here.

Maserati A6G for me! They look even better in the flesh.

I'll take the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, thank you Alex.

My choices
1. Fiat 8v
2. Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale
3. Ferrari 250GTZ

Yeah, kinda dig the 250 gtz as well.

There are several solid contenders for a "best of the best" award:

Fiat 8V
Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato
Maserati A6G/54
Ferrari 250GTZ

Even though I'm a Ferrari appassionato, I have to give the nod to the Aston Martin. But if I could afford any of my finalists, I wouldn't mind having any on my list.

Favorite ? ... I'll take one of each, PLEASE ... I'll let you know in a few ( months, years, decades ) ... all are stunning

Great list of wonderful cars, although I would make it a dozen adding the Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato, my personal favorite.
Alphasud

They are all beautiful but I will take the Lancia Fulvia Zagato!

Oddly missing the Zagato bodies Porsches? They were stunning and oh so cool!
RallyeRalph

So true, and also oddly missing the obvious and iconic Fiat-Abarth 750 Double Bubble Zagato coupes.

My fav Zagato design is one not shown here—the Round-tail early Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ. Just so gorgeous and well proportioned and fast.

Coda Tonda.

I'm liking that TZ1 except for the way the exhaust hangs down. Needed to be tucked in tight with maybe even a body indent.

The Aston, definitely.
hyperv6

Never a fan of their styling but the Aston here is the best of the bunch.
KenRhodes

I'm disappointed by the absence of the Fiat-Abarth Zagato "Double Bubble." That's the first car that convinced me great things could come in small (and underpowered) packages.

The Fiat, Maserati and maybe Alfa are ok. Zagato clearly got weirder as time went on.

Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale!!

The Ferrari 250GTZ would be my pick,

Yes yes a thousand times yes. Looks like a slightly dialed down Cobra with a hard top.

I'm not sure why the lovely Fiat Abarth double bubble 750GT is not listed. It certainly is better looking (and more historically significant) than the Rover.

I am with PAULIEMAN… I am a sucker for shooting brake inspired cars. Long list includes clown shoe, p1800ES, Ferrari’s example, and this Zagato

Of the ones on this list I like the Maserati the best. The Fiat 8v pictured is also very nice.

The Aston is overrated, in my opinion. It just doesn't come together as a design somehow.

As regards the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1... The back end is hideous!!!

Compare with that of the 1964 Studebaker Avanti..

Not to quibble, but as a person who is not very well versed in Zagoto's designs, the majority of these pictures do not really show the vehicles that well. The Fiat 8V for example - it looks great from that weird bird-eye angle, would like to see it closer and from a different perspective. Regardless, that Hyena looks like a russian cardboard car, and that green - I can't un-see it lol

I had a Alfa 2600 Zagato, one of just a handful made. I sold it along with my Osca roadster back in 1982 to help be get out of Indy and buy a country place on acreage. I miss the autos but love the country more.

the Ferrari 250GTZ for me without question

My daily driver would be the sleeper version ( Less Maserati Emblem middle of Grille ) of the 1955 A6G/54. The emblem would be on the billiard room wall. “Could you please straighten that James”

I had a friend who once owned a Fiat Abarth Zagato. a victim of a racing crash. Rather than restore the Zagato, he removed the engine and placed it into a Fiat 600, The 600 became a beast, unbelievablly fast! Sadly, he put the rest of the Zagato parts in the dumpster, including the cool rear deck lid.
Tinkerah

I wonder if the 1 of TZ1 was added "retroactively"?
Paul52

Actually the 1 was never added. It is just TZ...
To appreciate the elegance and proportion of the car you need to see it "in the flesh".

Saw the Aston at a museum... I think the show was called The Art of the Car. It left a big impression. It'd have my vote. Great looking car.

Hands down the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1! I lusted after it when I was a teenager owning my first Alfa Sprint and haven't stopped.

The 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato is the sexiest one for my money. Everything in the design is perfect including the uniquely different, but fitting grill.
