January is by far the busiest month on the auction calendar, with Mecum's gargantuan 10-day sale in Kissimmee, Florida, followed closely by the flurry of auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona. Of course, there will be more Mustangs, Mopars, Camaros, and Corvettes than you can shake a stick at, plus plenty of European performance cars thrown into the mix.

I can't stand people taking nice cars and ruining them. They would be better off if they totaled them in an accident than paying someone to ruin works of art from the factory.

This list started with oddball (thumbs-up for the Drag-ula), but quickly turned gaudy with successively worse entries as the Avelate Coupe, Oldsmobile Intrigue, Martel Continental Coupe, Cizeta-Moroder and the Laser. If any of those sell for more than scrap-metal prices, it's a testament to the old adage that money doesn't buy taste!

I'm a big fan of oddballs, but the two Corvettes here are disappointing. The Avelate looks more like a Camaro, at least from the angle shown. The Martel appears to be an update of the modern Stutz Blackhawk, albeit with a Corvette roof. I'll take the Apollo or the Crossblade, thank you.
Were there two alternate coffin-based Munster dragsters, one in the television series and another in the movie, "Munster Go Home"? I seem to remember seeing two different cars back in the day, in addition to the hearse.

What a COOL article!! I see LOTS of neat "oddball" cars I would LOVE to drive from time to time so average folks could have an eyebrow raising experience and something to take a pic of and talk about later!!

I especially love the Munsters coffin car! But others would be cool to own as well!

The Apollo and Devin are fantastic.
(There’s a guy that vintage races a Devin C; met him at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix a few years back. Great guy, lovely car.) Cutaway Camaro is an interesting historical artifact— one could make a case that the Merc, Cizeta and Olds fall into different species of that genus. Barris stuff has it’s place, I guess. The balance of this list… hard to imagine a suitable punishment for the folks that stripped the inherent dignity from those machines. Reminds me of dressing up a dog in a stupid costume— I always feel sorry for the dog. (Although, not sure how much dignity a “Smart” car has to begin with.)

The Drag-U-La looks like the best deal. Odd cars aren't my thing, but I guess if one buys one Hagerty is probably the on company that can insure one. However it's best not to get in a fender bender with any one of these cars. Coffin cars were all the rage in the 1960s. Maybe they will come back into fashion with a remake of the Munsters.

The craze to lower EVERYTHING (trucks!) crowd should take a stab at the mighty Laser, along with a paint job minus the considerable sparkle. I know it's supposed to be loud and cheesy!

Having owned and enjoyed a 2003 C5 Corvette Anniversary Convertible for several years, I have to say that the Avelate Coup is simply an ugly version of a good looking car.
