A 1963 Dodge Polara 440 wagon may not be the typical platform that the muscle car realm encompasses, but it's from the era and has the brunt force and loud roar!
I bought the car from eBay a few years ago after I sold my track-prepped Mazdaspeed Miata. It is from California, and the owner had it since he was 19. He was building it to be a stock car tribute, and I am keeping that theme.
Ignore the 413 decals on the valve covers. The current 440 engine is out of a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner (Meep,meep). It has 4 Weber carbs with 6" stacks. The 4-speed transmission is also out of a ‘70 Plymouth Roadrunner. Hurst shifter. Old Skool Doug's headers (that just saw a repaint last weekend).
The OEM fuel tank was located under the driver's side rear fender, so we pulled that out and replaced it with a Fuel cell in the trunk.
A 4 pt. Roll cage with driver’s door bar was installed by a local shop, Thompson Racing Fabrication. It’s up on the lift now getting a bunch of upgrades for Hot Rod Drag Week, (whenever it may happen). Upgrades include but aren't limited to a Transmission rebuild, upgraded Mcleod clutch, and an NRA-spec flywheel. I also plan to cut the rear fenders for more wheel/tire space. It may get a solid front axle someday to make it an official old skool gasser, but that won't be happening this year!
It was built in Norwood, Ohio and was an Arizona car most of its life. It was imported into Canada approximately 10 to 12 years ago. It changed hands in Canada from the person that originally imported it to his friend and then it became mine! The car came with a 350 small block, Edelbrock aluminium heads, Edelbrock EFI, a 5 speed Tremec 600lb/ft-capable manual transmission, a 12-bolt 4:10 gear ratio differential and Flowmaster dual exhaust! The best thing is at 60 miles an hour at highway speed, the engine is purring at 2200 RPM due to the overdrive of the transmission. It also was fitted with a new late model fuse box and wiring throughout the vehicle. How perfect was that, at least to me!
After the test drive it was very obvious to me that I needed to get this car in my name! As always, it now came down to money. We talked a bit, and then gave him my offer! It was $5000 below what he was asking. He didn’t bite my head off but kept trying to negotiate! I said, look, I am here, I have the cash, lets get this deal done! He then turned to me, and said, okay and shook my hand. The rest is history!
It was just a dream come true! I was driving it back from the owners place to my cousins and saying to myself, did this just happen? As with any car guy, you just can’t let things be left alone! Since owning the car, I have done some minor and major mods! I have changed the radiator to a heavy duty aluminum radiator, changed the rear drums to disc brakes and calipers, added front SSBC calipers to the cross drilled and slotted disc rotors. I added MSD multi spark ignition to the HEI distributor to aid in the firing of the platinum spark plugs. The major mods I have done was one, changed the timing chain to a timing gear that sounds like a supercharger and two, is that I changed the Vortec heads to Edelbrock aluminum big valve heads with stainless steel 1.5 ratio rocker arms, combined it with Edelbrock EFI system. What a change! I can only describe it to you this way! If you never knew what I did, you would swear that I dropped a big block in the car. It was that much more of a significant horsepower and torque gain with a great performance gain like starting and throttle response!
I have done many more small things to her throughout the years, but the one thing I will mention is that I will be adding white permanent lettering on the tires! “CAMARO” lettering at the 12 o’clock position, and “69 Z28” at the 6 o’clock position on the tire.
Last year she took 2 awards at the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton, New Brunswick , Canada. One was top 3 out of 200 cars and the other was top 25 out of 1778 cars! Awesome memories!

Coated headers; Holley 4150 double pumper; Offenhauser intake manifold, DeWitts 1249022M radiator. 12 bolt Moser rear end with Eaton 3:55 Posi gear. ; Turbo 400 transmission with TransGo 400 - Pro shift kit. Cal Trac control arms.
I have owned this car for the last 3 years and plan on passing it to my son one day. As an avid muscle car enthusiast there is a feeling for all classics that only this community can relate to. GM;Mopar, Dodge,Ford; they all have a place in muscle car history that will be hard to duplicate!
